6:59 AM 9/29/2009: Fun at the state tax office...

Every year around this time of year I drive over to the state tax office and renew my business lic in person. I have always done that so I don't have to wait for the mail and so that I am there if anything gets messed up.

Well I get there yesterday and I am told that the tax office no longer handles my type of business lic. After finding out it is now done by the Secretary of States office I am giving a sheet of paper and told to go "online".

So I go to the link online and it does not work. I call and get "oh yea it won't be up till the first" Then I ask the question "how do I renew on time if you won't take renewals until after I am late?" which after asking a few people I get...

"Well you can print out the form and mail it in and you'll be ok" So I ask the question "So because you guys are switching to a new system there will be no penalty if you guys get this a day or two late as you changed and have no online system in place?" Which gets me the answer...

"Well I am not sure but I think so. But we have not gone to the training yet"

Then I just had to ask the question "So you change to a new system in 3 days but nobody knows the system?" which gets me "Yea"

After all that fun I had a few questions about the new form and got "well we have not trained on it yet so you should just send it in and see what happens."

Well needless to say I did inform her that I wanted to be sure I was doing what I needed to and did not wish to "experiment" with my business lic.

Fast forward a few more hours on the phone and talking to about 5 more people and I got it all done right.

It's days like this I can see why some never bother to get a business lic. As you need to put a metal plate in your head to stop the damage of banging your head into all the walls the state puts up.
