RenoGeek's Computer Terms Glossary - Ad Hoc Network

A ad hoc network is a type of network connection established for a single session.

As an example, if you need to transfer a few files to a laptop, you could create an ad hoc network between your computer and the laptop to transfer the file.

This can be done with a crossover cable, or with a wireless card to communicate between the two systems. This could also be expanded to connect more the just two computers.
