RenoGeek's Computer Terms Glossary - Backup

In very simple terms a backup is a 2nd copy of your data stored in a safe location for future recovery should you loose the primary copy of your data.

The reason this is needed with computers is the fact that all computer hardware can fail at anytime. And when that computer does fail it may be very hard to recover any data that was stored on it.

A 2nd copy of all your important data (a backup) means that your chance of getting your data back is increased.
