BIOS or Basic Input Output System. The BIOS is a pre-installed program stored on a chip on the motherboard of the computer that lets end user access the most basic operation of their systems. Through BIOS users can change their hardware and other system settings. In most cases the BIOS will run a quick check at system startup of the computers hardware and let the user know if there are any major problems with the system before the O/S starts up.
