Also know as (coders/decoders), Are audio and video formats using in many cases some form of compression so that they use less disk space, making for smaller downloads.

Many Audio and video streams are compressed with codecs when they are saved and then uncompressed by codecs when played back. AVI and mpeg files are common codecs. Codecs also makes it possible to broadcast video clips over Internet connections.
