RenoGeek's Computer Terms Glossary - DHCP

DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A protocol used to dynamically assign IP addresses to computer systems. The server waits for a computer to connect to it and then assigns an IP address to the client computer system.

DHCP helps in setting up all kind of networks, since IP addresses no longer have to be manually assigned to each computer system on a network. Because of this, it is one of the most commonly used networking protocols in use today.
