"Domain Name System", or DNS.
The DNS converts a website name (thissite.com) into the IP address you wish to visit. This way you do not need to remember a long string of IP numbers everytime you wish to visit a website.

So something like "13.234.4.132" turns into just yoursite.com
As most people have an easier time remembering names the DNS has been a boon to the growth of the internet.
